La Ola (The Wave) is a children’s home located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Founded January 1, 2010, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported primarily by private funding. Our scope is more than that of an orphanage in that we care for abandoned and abused children as well as those from impoverished local communities whose families entrust them into our care for safety and an opportunity to have a good education and improved quality of life.

In January, 2010, retired medical professionals Dr. Robert and Becky Plinke, with assistance from two of their adult children, Abigail and Jeff, established a home to meet the needs of Mexico’s abandoned, abused and impoverished children. Since that time, La Ola has provided care for more than a hundred young people to help break the cycle of poverty, abuse and abandonment and find their way into a new life.

Today, La Ola supports twenty-three children and four young adults ranging from 1 to 22 years of age. With your help, these beautiful, bright Mexican youths and many more in the future will be able to live in a safe, loving environment promoting spiritual development, good physical and mental health, receive an excellent bi-lingual education, and enjoy the promise of a bright future.

More than half of Mexico’s children currently live in poverty and neglect and up to 70 percent suffer from physical, often sexual abuse. Every year, thousands of these children are abandoned and many end up living on the streets where they are forced to survive through begging, prostitution or drugs. Without comprehensive intervention, this epidemic of childhood poverty, abuse and abandonment becomes a vicious cycle repeated each generation.

No matter their age, each child arrives at La Ola with unique physical, mental and emotional challenges. Our girls come from circumstances which put them at high risk to be victims of human trafficking. Consequently, we have created an environment that recognizes and responds to individual needs and provides comprehensive care that includes much more than the basics of nutritious meals, appropriate clothing, and a safe housing.

Each child’s medical, dental and psychological needs are assessed and fully met, and in the home, La Ola staff and volunteers promote harmony by showing the children how to love and care for one another. Further, all children of La Ola receive a highly accredited education at a local private school and full support to attend university. Through all things, La Ola’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty and abuse, providing our children with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence needed to stand on their own and live out their dreams.

La Ola is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.
